How the hades did it get activated and how do I undo it. PLEASE remember that I am a terminal and console moron.

No idea how it got activated. Undoing it is easier. Just fire up Terminal and use the code Mike Bombich quoted above:

Code:

sudo fsaclctl -p /Volumes/volname -d

Hit return. You will be asked for your password and perhaps offered a short lecture. Type your password and hit return. Nothing will appear when you type. That is normal. You do need to be logged in as an admin, though.

You need to replace "volname" with the name of the relevant volume. If you have spaces or odd characters in the name (e.g. "Macintosh HD"), put the whole name in quotes (e.g. "/Volumes/Macintosh HD").

Repeat for every affected volume.

When you are done, try rerunning the check to make sure you are getting a different message for each of the volumes now.

Restart.

Quote:

This should correct the problem?

Unless by some bizarre coincidence you also have some other issue or setting which results in the same behaviour, yes, it should.

Please report back with your results - ideally both here and at Apple Discussions - so that others can find the solution (if it works) or any problems can be addressed (if it does not). If you get any unexpected output from Terminal, make a note of the exact error message and let us know. (I don't think you will, but if you do.)
[NetRestore Troubleshooting] Help Accessing Network Shares After NetBooting

I'm very new to Mac imaging and Macs in general, but this is what I've managed to accomplish so far and seem to be stuck at the last step:

One iMac with Leopard has been converted through console trickery into a NetBoot server and then NetRestore Helper was used to create a NetBoot image from it.

I made a master image using NetRestore Helper from separate iMac with an identical Leopard setup (minus the NetBoot machinations). My plan was to re-image this Mac with NetBoot to check everything works

The two have file-sharing over AFP installed and are connected to our Active Directory domain, because we mainly deploy PCs. Now, when logged in normally, the iMac can connect to my "server" just fine and see everything that I've shared; however, when I NetBoot the one to be imaged (this part seems to work just fine), I cannot access anything on my "server", or any other computer for that matter. When I "browse", all the computers are listed under shared are still there, but have no folders sharing, and I cannot select my .dmg file. In short, the shares are disappearing when NetBooted, and I have no idea if it's a network problem, something wrong with some configuration in my system preferences, NetRestore, or what.

Any insight anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated! :(
[NetRestore Troubleshooting] Dual-Boot ASR Restore

Tbird800, it might make things easier if you place your images in the "NetBootSP0/Resources/Disk Images/" folder so they are available automatically in the Configuration menu. I use almost exclusively dynamic items so it's a lot easier than creating a configuration for each image. Let me know if you want more details on that and I'll dig up a link (or someone else can). I beleive it's in the NR documentation.

I'm also interested in making a fully automated, dual-boot, multicast (both OSX and Windows) solution. From what I can see it should be possible, but someone please correct me if I'm missing something here.

It seems to me like you would have to have two OS X servers, one to multicast the OSX image and one to multicast the Windows image. Then you could make two Multicast ASR Configurations in NetRestore (one pointing to each server) and the rest should be the same as a normal fully-automated dual-boot restore.

I would love to try this, however I only have one OS X server. If someone has more than one server that they could try this on that would be great. Or if you know how to set up two separate multicasts on one server at the same time that would be better .
[NetRestore Troubleshooting] Run NetRestore Helper from NetInstall

I'm in the same situation - I need the ability to create images using the NetBoot set. My problem at the moment is the new MBAir platform. I can use NB to restore the image, but I also need to create images on the new machines. The simplest way to do that would be via NB.

I've put NRH in the NetInstall-Restore DMG and can launch the app. The problem is that NRH prompts for a password and I have no clue what it is. I've tried the passwords from the machine I created the NB set on, it's not blank, etc. NetRestore doesn't do this - it assumes root access.

Any new ideas out there since this topic was started? Thanks!
[Carbon Copy Cloner Discussion] v3.1.1 has an 'ad' window...right?: YES. (EXPLAINED by MB)

I suppose I could mention that in the software update message. But yeah, it's true. I'd like to emphasize here that it is merely a matter of affording the bandwidth. With the release of 3.1, I was absolutely stunned by the number of downloads. I'm hoping that this strikes a good balance -- encouragement for those that haven't donated to consider it, and coverage for the bandwidth consumed by those that won't.

The other thing I should mention is that I sought out Other World Computing. I've worked with their personable staff for nearly seven years now -- they're "real people" working out of the burbs of Chicago. I respect them as a vendor, so I have no qualms suggesting that people do business with them.
[NetRestore Troubleshooting] Wierdness in a LoginHook—OP SOLVED

Just in case anyone is interested...

This script "refresh-default-homedir-savetmp.sh", that I was using in my LoginHook has a "mv" command that is used to move the /Users/Student folder to a freshly created timestamped directory. That appears to be the source of the flakey behavior. I changed the "mv" to a "cp -Rp" and "rm" of the /Users/Student and all appears to be working as originally expected.

So this seems to have resolved this problem.
okay... so I see the problem is that the "ntfsclone" and "ntfsresize" commands in the post action restore script are no longer included in the image.

is this because these utils are no longer the recommended way to restore the ntfs image? should I be using asr or something else to do this? or did I neglect to install ntfsprogs or something on the original image?

thanks
[NetRestore Troubleshooting] Windows Partition

I am having problems with the Enable Full Automation feature of NetRestore. When I setup the NetRestore Preferences, I have selected to have it Partition Windows using 35% of the disk - then I save it. Whenever my client boots into NetRestore, it automates the process but when it partitions the disk it partitions the 'WINDOWS' disk to the default 20% instead of the 35% like I setup.

Any ideas?
[Carbon Copy Cloner Discussion] New to Backups/CCC....please help!

It's sounding good!

The slowness is for two reasons: 1) as you surmise, USB, which may be approximately half the speed of FireWire, and 2) caches need to be built; subsequent use after the first time should be a bit faster. Everything will work on the new drive at least as fast as on the old one - maybe not instantly, but very soon when caches have been built.

There is an alternative way to change the boot volume that is quicker than using the Option key boot: System Preferences > Startup Disk > select the required volume, click "Restart". You obviously do the same for going in both directions.

Prepare the new drive according to all the details in the link in B4 U post…. Then follow motnoslo's #3. When you do that cloning (external to new internal) I would recommend that you use "Incremental backup..." with everything in the Source list selected; that will a) not copy unneeded "rubbish", b) allow CCC to not copy certain unneeded items, and will give you a "cleaner" new volume than if you had used "Backup everything". If you are curious about the reasons see ‘Block-level’ and ‘File-level’ clones ~ an explanation and the list at the bottom of http://www.bombich.com/software/docs/CCCHelp/content/filters.html
[Carbon Copy Cloner Discussion] Clean RE-Install

It is virtually unheard of that if you use either "Backup everything" or "Incremental backup..." with everything selected for everything not to be copied. I cannot begin to guess what might have gone wrong.

Have a look at all the details in B4 U post…, especially in regard to preparation of a target drive (format, Partition Scheme, zeroing, etc), to see if you spot anything pertinent. Had you recently, whie booted from elsewhere, run Disk Utility's "Repair Disk" for the source (or used fsck -fy)? Had you recently repaired permissions? Why did you need to do a clean re-install?

We *might* be able to tell you more if you let us see the complete section (from "==" to "==") of CCC.log (in /Library/Logs) for that cloning.

Be aware that no cloning is truly completed until you have booted on the clone and checked as much as patience allows that all is exactly as when you are working on your internal drive. Never entrust your data to a clone that you haven't run that "proof of pudding" test on.
CCC v3.1.1 is being finalised. For the moment it is available as CCC v3.1.1-b1. Choose "Update CCC" from the Carbon Copy Cloner menu, check the box next to "Inform me of beta releases", then click on the "Update Now" button. See CCC 3.1 Known Issues [and v3.1.1-b1 released Apr 9] for the details. It is a 'beta' but reports from users are favourable, mainly for the improved error reporting and handling where needed.
[NetRestore Troubleshooting] backup_user_data

I am using Mac OS 10.5.3 with NR 3.4.5. I have a USB hard drive with partitions. I boot from one of the partitions (extMacintoshHD) and run NR from that external partition. On another partition (Image) I have an image stored that I created with NRH. The image was made from a MacBook Pro. Another partition (lifeboat) is where I want to use a pre-action script to backup the contents of the Users folder from the laptop about to be restored.

After reading the documentation I have the Restore working fine but I have not been able to get the pre-action backup_user_data to work. I do not have any servers to use so I need to use the USB drive. When I comment out the lines in the script that refer to servers, it does not produce the results I want.

I also tried using this in a new pre-action script:
ditto /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Users /Volumes/lifeboat
but even though it works from Terminal it does not work as a pre-action script. Is this because NetRestore has unmounted the volumes?

If I ever get this to work I want to filter the script to leave out certain file extensions that the IT department does not back up.

Thanks for any suggestions

[NetRestore Troubleshooting] ASR Multicast Issue

We've been using multicasting for the last year and a half with few problems. We just upgraded our lab with new intel imacs and a new 4 core xserve xeon.

Our multicast does fairly well except when a mac gets a lost packet, 95% of the time it will not recover it and gets a data rate exceeds client capabilities error. If a client recovers packets I call it dumb luck since most just die when they attempt.

We also recently upgraded our switches to 1gigabit hp Procurves. I am not the network administrator so do not know any config settings on them.

Previously we were able to multicast, get a several lost packets on some machines, but they would recover nicely (seen 10-20 packet loss recoveries before). We were running 10.4 tiger with g5's, could do 40+ machines with no failures.

We are running at 40,000,000 client data rate right now and can get about 75% of our machines restored on that with no failures. The frustration is the machines that get 1 or 2 packet loss just die when they hit the end. Have to reboot them and go again. I don't know if it's a problem with netrestore 3.4.5, our new switches or what not.

I do know everything was working well with 3.3.6 on our 10.4 tiger xserve and g5 lab.

I've tried varying the multicast address (using one in 239.255.x.x or 224.77.x.x range, doesn't seem to matter), no success. Tried throttling down, still get failed packet recovery (10,000,000 to 20,000,000 data rates). At a loss at what's causing the packet failure.

"I am suggesting a slight interface change that would probably make things clearer"

Mike always welcomes that sort of thing from users. Please put your suggestion to him directly via CCC Help menu > "Report a Problem" (don't worry that it's not a terrible "problem"). Delete any unneeded logs that get attached to the email. Thanks.

I based what I said on replies I recall such as "Thanks. It works fine.", "Ah, neat!", "Sorry, I should have read that section in CCC Help.", etc. Feel free to search the forum.
I do agree with you that the distinction between a saved task for manual use and a schedule is not "intuitive". Thanks for taking the time and trouble to try to improve on that.
[Carbon Copy Cloner Discussion] LaunchDaemom

You most definitely do NOT need to do anything as root, and I advise you strongly not to.

That message is not telling you that something is wrong with CCC or with anything you are doing: it is CCC telling you that something is amiss on your Mac. The task should be saved as a .plist in /Library/LaunchDaemons; something about your Mac (perhaps the settings on /Library?) is preventing that from happening. Boot on your clone and run Disk Utility's "Repair Disk" (multiple times if necessary until the report is "...seems to be OK"); booted back on the internal drive run "Repair Permissions".

Even though you are already using CCC, check all the details in B4 U post…, especially in regard to preparation of a target drive.

thank you

beta? am too old for betas, the young persons can test stuff

backup is complicated
1-hard drive failure is rare, I have only had one in 15 years and that one I caused by inserting the cable with the pins rotated 90 degrees, how did I do that? dunno but the smoke and fire came out
2-Retrospect is brutal, every time the reminder came up to back up I groaned as it takes all night to do 4 partitions
3-staggering is also cool, if I delete a file and backup to drive A it is not on A, but it might be on drive B from the backup the month before
4-wrongly deleting files is more common than hard drive failure so the undelete apps are very important
5-setting the delete email schedules too short has cost me more than hard drive failure

but if CCC remains cool I might shorten the schedule of staggered backup

have not tried the Time Capsule thing

by the way I have two other machines that I CCC'd today with no problem, they took long time since I started from scratch, but not nearly as long as Retrospect, and the clones boot so...

will return next month for round 3 :)

[Carbon Copy Cloner Discussion] External Boot Disc?—OP SOLVED

hmmm... not sure why there were permission problems on the target/clone disc then. Because, as I stated in an earlier post, I did a permissions and disk repair on both source and target disks before I started and all seemed fine. But, after I made the clone, the external drive had a ton of permission problems. The source disc was fine when I rechecked it?!

Seems to be working now. I will report back if there are any abnormal behaviors with the disk. Should be OK because I followed the B4U Start info.
[NetRestore Troubleshooting] Restoring older machines (ibook g3) with 10.5 server and NR

Here is my setup.

OSX Server running 10.5.3.

Netboot image created with version 3.4.4 works fine with Intel and PPC G4, G5 machines.

I have a few iBook G3 I would like to restore to a 10.4.11 master. Unfortunately, iBook G3 can't boot in 10.5 so my netboot image fails with theses machines. I tried using an older Netboot set (10.4.11 created on a PPC machine) with no luck.

What setup should I use to restore this older hardware ?

Thanks for any hint on this matter.
If you would prefer to use CCC (e.g. to preserve permissions) you can, of course, do so. You could use CCC to identify the item causing the problem. Use "Incremental backup..." and select smaller and smaller groups of items in that Applications folder to home in on it.
[NetRestore Troubleshooting] Post restore actions failure

I am receiving the same message. When I restart the computer the image appears to be restored OK, but the post-image scripts have not worked. I also am new to this process and don't know how to see the netrestore.err or netrestore.log files to be able to better debug the issue. Could you provide some basic information on accessing these files. I'm assuming that these logs are on the computer being imaged, right?

Ultimately I am trying to create a 10.4.11 image on an eMAC using Post Image processing to set the IP address, the computer name, and the four ARD fields.

I have successfully used the full automation process to image using ARD and setting the startup disk to an Auto image set. WoW is that great! If I can get it execute the post image scripts I would be in heaven.

One other question. I am wondering if I am setting up the post-image scripts properly. If I understand correctly, when I move my netrestore set to the /Library/NetBoot/NetBootSP0/ folder I should also move the Resources that was created at the same time to the folder. Is this the folder where I am to place the Machine_Specific_data.csv file into? Also the Post_Image Scripts placed here too? OR am I suppose to put these files inside the netrestore set I created by going to /Applications/Utilities/Resources

I'm a little confused on this part.

Thanks for any help you can give me!
[Carbon Copy Cloner Discussion] CCC not updating multiple deleted files in one directory

I have read "Before you post". This report has also been sent to Mike by email. I am posting it here in order to warn users and allow discussing possible questions.

Setup: Carbon Copy Cloner v 3.1 on Mac OS X 10.4.11, backing up the actual Mac OS X hfs+ Volume, called 'Macintosh HD', to an hfs+ volume on an usb disk. Free space on both volumes was plenty.

1. What did I do?

1. During a lengthy absence from home, I made local backups of some important files inside their respective directories. To recognize the backups and their versions later, I added the date and/or some other hint at the end of their name, like 'name_20080530120701' or 'name_20080530120701.sorted' or 'name.sorted'.
2. When I was back at home, I fired up CCC and updated my external backup of the entire Macintosh HD volume. The mode used was "copy selected items", with both "delete files that are not in the source" and "archive changed and deleted objects" checked. These are my standard settings.
3. Several weeks and CCC runs later, I deleted the local backup files from Macintosh HD.
4. I had CCC update the external backup of the entire Macintosh HD volume again, using my standard settings (see 1.2.).

2. What should happen?

1. The deleted files should disappear from the main backup and show up in the appropriate _CCC_* hierarchy instead.

3. What did happen?

1. One of the deleted files in each concerned directory was moved properly from the main backup to the newly created _CCC_* hierarchy.
2. The other deleted files in each concerned directory stayed in place in the main backup and did not show up in the newly created _CCC_* hierarchy.

4. Comments

1. This bug spoils the backed up system state available in case of an emergency. The presence of unexpected files can lead to inconsistencies and, depending on the nature of those files, cause arbitrary troubles.
2. Multiple deleted files inside the same directory are dealt with after all, although only one at a time. So, there's a workaround: I currently run CCC (at least) twice in a row and check the second _CCC_* hierarchy for signs of this bug. If I find anything but the CCC logs and stats and certain other files that are always changed, I either fix the problem by looking after the remaining to-be-deleted files and moving them into the corresponding _CCC_* folder manually or run CCC again and again, until the latest _CCC_* is clean. Tiresome, you bet.
3. This bug might be name rather than directory related. So far, I have only encountered it with multiple deleted files which, aside from being in the same directory, also shared a common name prefix.

blubb

p. s. :Please note, this is a bug report about CCC and as such, focussing on one of its rare flaws. Regardless, I am more than glad CCC exists. Mike is doing a great job. Thanks!

Those error messages are CCC telling you that something is wrong on your Mac. When you create a schedule CCC stores its details in a .plist file (e.g. that first one, "com.bombich.ccc.scheduledtask.24004B4F-97F2-44D8-87D3-C9F4B34B46C4.plist") in /Library/LaunchDaemons. For some reason CCC is unable to do that. You need to do some repair work on your Mac...

Boot on your Tiger Install DVD (insert the DVD and restart holding down the 'C' key), select your language, but go no further - you are not going to install anything. The menu bar should have appeared. In one of the menus find Disk Utility. Select your internal drive and click "Repair Disk" (not Repair Permissions). If a repair is reported run Repair Disk again, repeating until the result is "...appears to be OK". Quit from Disk Utility. Find "Restart" in a menu and restart on your internal drive.

Now, booted on your internal drive, launch Disk Utility (should be in /Applications/Utilities) and run "Repair Permissions" ('Repair', not 'Verify'). Quit from Disk Utility.

Launch CCC and try again to set and save a schedule.
=-=-=-=-

BTW, just because the picture shows that you CAN have multiple schedules doesn't mean that you need more than one. I think one is all you will need, set to run when and as often as you decide.
=-=-=-=-

BTW 2 ~ If you had a FireWire connection to your external drive I would not have told you to use the Oh-so-slow DVD. I would have told you to boot on the external drive and run Repair Disk from there, which would have been many times faster.

Hi John

I havn't played with the leopard disk utility yet, so I'm not sure if it will correctly partition a drive for Dual boot.

Try using either the bootcamp utility or the terminal command

Code:

sudo diskutil resizeVolume

for the partitioning.

hope this helps
[Mac OS X Deployment] Deploying Macs with two NTFS partitions.

Hi scastle

I did some imaging last year with Tiger and two NTFS partitions.

I used diskutil from the terminal to partition the drives something along the lines below (from memory ):-

Code:

sudo diskutil resizeVolume disk0s2 80G "MS-DOS FAT32" "Windows" 30G "MS-DOS FAT32" "DATA" 25G

You will obviously need to change the sizes to match your disk capacities.

Hope this helps
